How to...
Please also share your ministry
ideas and what you have learned in implementing them.
Prayer Ministries
| Write prayer requests on a dry-erase board, along with the name of
the person who volunteers to pray for that request. |
| Keep a prayer journal. |
| Ask for volunteers to pray for specific requests during the week. |
| For urgent prayer requests establish an email mailing list. To do
this, pass around a list and request that members write down their
email addresses. Then have someone send a single message to everyone
on the list. Now everyone can write to all people on this list by
simply replying to that message and choosing "all
recipients" when sending their message. Don't forget to have someone update the
address list when necessary. |
Money Ministries
| Take up an offering every week a specific project in addition
to the regular Sabbath School mission offering. Some projects may
require several weeks. |
| Request that your church board approve of your group having a line
item in the church's financial records so money can be given to your
group's ministries along with tithes and offerings via the offering
envelopes. This also allows checks for your projects to be written by
the church treasurer directly to the recipient, which enhances the visibility
of the entire church. |
| Encourage members of your group to notice needs where they work,
play or live, and bring those needs to the group. Allow the group to
decide what to support collectively. When appropriate, ask recipients
to come and share with the class about their experience. |
Study Ministries
| Consider having an hour-long class to allow more time for study. |
| Supplement your study guides with resources listed on the Resources
page. |
| If you choose to study something other than the lesson, plan the
quarter (or several weeks) in advance so themes or topics can be
explored. |
Time Ministries
| Utilize the resources and gifts of your members, such as those who
may already be involved in such things as Maranatha projects or ASI. |
| Pick a special project to regularly support such as serving a meal
every month at a local soup kitchen (be sure to involve the kids). |
| Designate someone to coordinate your time ministry activities to
provide focus to this area. This also provides a contact person when
people become aware of time ministry opportunities. |
| Seek to become aware of acute needs that members or neighbors might
have such as needing leaves raked or needing moving assistance. |
| Contact the activities director at a local extended care facility to
schedule singing there. Be sure to involve the kids - they and the
residents will be touched. |
Social Ministries
| Ask members who are interested to be in charge of planning or
coordinating social activities. |
| Be sure to include people who are not always or not often in your
class, such as parents who stay with their children during children's
Sabbath School, members who may be involved in other ministries such
as working in the children's divisions, and members who are absent
because of work or other responsibilities. |
